This project involved the design and construction of paved trails throughout the Harold L. Lyon Arboretum. Several routes were redesigned and are currently being rebuilt in compliance with the Accessibility Guide for Outdoor developed areas. In addition to the repaving, safety signs were also installed, designating accessible paths and informing hikers of the trail boundaries.
The Arboretum is located in Manoa Valley where rainfall is heavy and trail erosion is a major concern. Bow Engineering analyzed the drainage conditions and proposed re-grading the trail cross slopes and adding water bars.
During this project, Bow Engineering received training on the High Efficiency Trail Assessment Process (HETAP) and is currently obtaining Universal Trail Assessment certification. The use of the HETAP software and equipment allowed for objective and accurate trail data such as cross slope, grade, tread width, etc.
