Bow Engineering provided the civil design of a 134-unit affordable housing complex in Poipu, Kauai. The affordable housing complex incorporated the “Complete Streets” concept and included 23 buildings, a community center, new roadways, parking, ADA, and drainage improvements. This project was prompted by the Kauai County Housing Agency in order to provide more affordable housing options to residents. The project is currently in construction and is expected to be completed in mid 2019.
Our services included site and utility layout, erosion control, grading, drainage analysis, permitting, and project coordination. We conducted an extensive drainage and flood analysis and determined that over 400 underground chambers were required in order to meet storm water quality requirements; these were placed throughout the project site. We prepared a National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit and Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP).
For the schematic phase of this project, we utilized a program called “Infraworks,” to layout the site and generate a conceptual rendering. Infraworks is an extension of AutoCAD Civil 3D which allows the user to manipulate their Civil 3D surface with pre-made objects. In the sample above, a pre-loaded roadway section was used to draft in the streets. REVIT models from the project architect were added and set to actual dimensions for realistic effect. Objects added to the site automatically adjust to the contours.
