Umauma Bridge is a deteriorating steel girder and trestle bridge, built over Umauma Stream along Hawaii Belt Road in the North Hilo District. This rehabilitation project includes construction of concrete support towers to be placed within the existing steel support towers, widening of the bridge deck and roadway shoulders, and construction of new concrete railings. The towers would be constructed within the steel towers to preserve the historically significant bridge structure.
Bow Engineering’s scope of work for this Federal Aid Project included design of the approaches and departures to the bridge, guard rails, abutment and deck drainage improvements, and traffic control plans. We prepared a comprehensive drainage analysis to determine the effects the proposed improvements would have on the stream flow. Our scope of work also included preparation and approval of an environmental assessment and permitting associated with work on and around the bridge and stream, including Section 401/404 Water Quality permits and design of BMP for construction activities.
